In this post I share a step by step guide on how to get started in affiliate marketing and a free to join community that can help you along the way.
Affiliate marketing has been around for over a decade, with Amazon its pioneer in the web’s early days. Affiliate marketing has continued to grow as a popular and financially rewarding way of doing online work from home, and is particularly worth investigating if you have a passion or interest you’d like to write about.
Affiliate marketing is simply promoting other people’s products to visitors to your website and then getting commission for every sale.
The process works like this:
1) Identify a niche or special topic you’d like to focus on e.g. embroidery, golf, event management etc. Your niche can literally be anything people are searching for information about online. You can use Google’s free keyword tool to identify what and how many searches people are conducting on your niche.
2) Create a website – The best and easiest way of doing this is to use free WordPress blogging software and to customise a template from Themeforest to suit your branding and niche. You should then start filling your website with useful, relevant and interesting information – not spammy junk! You need to attract readers through social media, as well as the search engines, and if your content is worthless then people won’t recommend you or stay long enough to click on the ads.
3) Drive traffic. This is arguably the hardest and most time consuming part. For your first online work from home affiliate marketing project it’s a good idea to target a niche with little competition in the search engines. That way you will find it easier to attract visitors and there are many ‘long tail’ keyphrases which your competitors might not be targeting. Other methods for driving traffic include promotion in social media (by setting up a Facebook page and Twitter profile), pay-per-click advertising (in Google and Facebook) and posting links in forums.
4) Add affiliate links. You can find products you can promote on Amazon or on affiliate marketing focused websites like Clickbank. The products owner should provide you with banner ads and links you can post strategically on your website to attract clicks. You then earn commission for every referred sale. Just make sure you promote products ethically and responsibly. Only promote products you use yourself and/or think would be useful to your readers.
So if you’d like to do online work from home running an affiliate marketing business, get reading and thinking about what niche topic you can write about and earn commission through selling other people’s products.
